Victorino Dennis M. Socrates: A Journey of Public Service in Palawan

In the pristine and picturesque island of Cuyo, Palawan, a destined leader was born. Victorino Dennis M. Socrates, the eldest son of the former Palawan Governor and esteemed lawyer Salvador P. Socrates and public school teacher Elsa S. Macalinao, was raised in an environment that fostered a strong sense of public service and dedication to the people of Palawan.

After graduating from high school, young Dennis set his sights on higher education. He pursued his Bachelor of Science in Legal Management at the prestigious Ateneo De Manila University. The pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; he completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Philippines, eventually passing the bar exam in 1987. His unwavering commitment to legal education and public service led him to become a Juris Doctor Professor at the Palawan State University School of Law.

In the early 2000s, Dennis ventured into local politics. He served as the Mayor of Puerto Princesa City from 2001 to 2002, an initial taste of the responsibilities that would later define his career.

In 2010, Dennis’s passion for law and public service saw him elected as the Congressman of the 2nd District of Palawan. During his tenure, he authored a remarkable 18 House Bills, 7 national bills, and 11 local bills. His legislative efforts were not limited to his authored bills; he co-authored 67 house bills, showcasing his commitment to comprehensive, people-oriented governance.

As a Congressman, Dennis served on several key committees, each a testament to his diverse range of interests and expertise: Agriculture and Food; Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources; Foreign Affairs; Health; Human Rights; Justice; National Cultural Communities; Public Information; Revision of Laws. His work in these committees demonstrated a deep commitment to both the local and national welfare of the Filipino people.

In 2013, Dennis was elected as Vice Governor of the Province of Palawan, and his dedication to public service led him to serve three consecutive terms, solidifying his reputation as a committed and dependable leader.

In 2022, the people of Palawan recognized Dennis’s unwavering dedication and elected him as the Governor of the province. His leadership has been characterized by a steadfast focus on good governance and his initiative, “Serbisyo Progreso Sambayanan,” which translates to “Service, Progress, and the Community.” He’s also taken on the role of Chairman of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, underlining his commitment to both the environment and the well-being of his constituents.

Beyond the political arena, Dennis has authored “Mga Titik Ukol sa Politika” (Notes on Good Governance) and β€œGauium Cum Pace” (Joy with Peace) are testaments to his commitment to promoting ethical and effective governance, and faith in God.

Today, Governor Victorino Dennis M. Socrates continues to lead with dedication and vision, shaping the future of Palawan through good governance and a profound commitment to the well-being of his constituents. His journey from the serene shores of Cuyo to the bustling halls of governance is a testament to the power of public service and the potential for change in the hands of a dedicated leader.

Palawan Governor Dennis M. Socrates has been promoted as Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) in the Reserve Force of the Philippine Air Force during the donning of rank ceremony held at VJR Hall, Capitol last April 5, 2024.
